It’s 3:51

It’s pouring outside, and I am bored!  This is a tough month to try and learn anything about managing a construction project.  Apparently we have received record rainfall this month.  There is talk that we haven’t seen this much rain since the 18th century ( during the month of April).  Could that really be true?

I spent some of the afternoon organizing my basement and demolishing a wall of shelving only to discover mold.  Oh joy!  There are certainly some things that need to be taken care of before this house sells.

I’m thinking of curling up with a glass of wine, and the People’s History of the United States.  Quite an eye opening book.  Enjoy the day!

I Hired a Hitman…

Yesterday I was taking a walk in my parents neighborhood when i came across an odd looking squirrel.  The poor thing seemed to be crawling along using only his front legs.  I went to look closer, and he slowly crawled a few feet away and hid behind a fence.  I must have scared him.  Well, about 15 minutes later, I had to pass by the same spot, and I noticed that the squirrel was still there.  I felt so bad for him!  What an awful fate: injured, vulnerable and unable to move very far…  I knew what had to be done.  Only, I regretfully knew I could not be the one to do it.

And so, I sadly went to my Pop who was working out in the yard and asked him to put the little guy out of his misery.  Shovel in hand, Dad headed on down the road, and in less than a minute took care of the problem.  Afterwards, he was fairly quiet…just chucked the shovel into the dirt ( to clean off the blade) and said nothing.  I guess some things just need to be done, but i can’t stop this nagging voice in the back of my head.  Some little unreasonable chatter that says ” What if the squirrel would have been just fine with only 2 working legs…Maybe you didn’t need to send someone to kill him…”  I hope that’s not true, because if it is I feel terrible.  As is true many times in this life, the right thing is not always the easiest.

So Impressed…

About 6 months ago I bought a card that gave me 4 free oil changes.  I finally got the chance to use of of those today, and what a great experience I had!  I went to a Merchant’s Tire and Auto in Midlothian.  I gave them my coupon for a free oil change and fluid check, and in about an hour they were done.  When i went to pick up my car I was impressed, because the guy checking me out didn’t try to sell me a thing!  Usually they slickly try and convince me to buy some sort of engine flush,  or tell me that some sort of crucial safety part  is beginning to wear out.  I have actually been to places that seem to scare you into buying all of these unnecessary upgrades.  One guy even brought me out into the garage and showed me these crucial problems, even after i told him I wouldn’t know a thing about what I was looking at.  When i took the car to a certified dealer, they told me that nothing was wrong with it. Man I love it when people take advantage of me.  Anyways, props to the guy at Merchants.  I appreciate the fast no hassle service.

I think I have a tape worm…

I lost another pound yesterday! I keep loosing weight and I feel like I am not even trying that hard!  Could it be that I have a parasite helping  me achieve my goals?  I really hope that’s not the case…those things are freaky!

We are all constantly bombarded with weight loss products, I’m surprised someone hasn’t tried to market these little guys…

I have a really bad habit of weighing myself most mornings.  Kind of sick really…. Well, today it paid off.  Even with all of the food writing and recipe creating I have been doing, I have still lost a bunch of weight since Christmas.  Today I had the pleasure of crossing the 10lb threshold.  Seriously, I am excited!! Wooohoo.  I haven’t felt this good since Hawaii.  I might even squeeze into a bikini this summer.  We’ll just have to wait and see!

Cafe Caturra

Check out my latest restaurant review.  I actually had to be a little harsh this time. Yikes!

Has anyone else tried this place out?

Just another day on the (new potential) job…

I saw a dead, rotting squirrel today while I was “at work.”  As mentioned, I am trying my “builder woman” hat on for size.  That’s what my Dad calls me now…builder woman.

So here it is, the rainiest day in months, and I am charged with the task of walking a piece of property out in Chester.  The whole outing started off with a bang as I stepped out of our pickup truck and right into a puddle of muddy disgusting water so deep, i couldn’t even see my foot anymore. Oh well, shit happens, on to the woods!  I look to my left – lush green undergrowth.  To my right – old rotting leaves and a dead squirrel.  At least I think that’s what it was.  I didn’t look at it long enough to investigate, and tried not to squeal for fear of embarrassing myself in front of the real estate agent.  Life’s not always glamorous, but I am enjoying the hell out it these days.

Cold and Rainy

Yesterday we took some friends out to Legends and sat on the deck enjoying many a delicious beer.  Today is a whole new story!  It’s very chilly and rainy outside, so i have decided that a good ol’ comfort meal is in order.

I now present to you Champaign Braised Chicken:

I am thinking of serving it with some buttery polenta.  Sometimes a little comfort food goes a long way!

What’s on your table tonight?

Guitar Hero

My husband is amazing.  He can play guitar hero on expert.  And while, I am happy for this accomplishment, a small part of me can’t help but wonder what would happen if this time was spent learning the real guitar.

Then maybe I wouldn’t have to hear the same 30 songs over and over again.  I’ll admit, it is a fun game…I even play from time to time myself, but I don’t know, sometimes I think we all spent too much time in some sort of virtual reality.  Like when I played doubles tennis with our friends in our small living room via the wii.

I used to really enjoy playing real tennis…  Something to definitely ponder.

7:10 AM

Yesterday I got a call at 7:10 in the morning.

I am trying on a pair of steel toed boots this week, and learning a bit about the world of construction.  Apparently the people out in the field are all about starting early…Which means that I have to be too.  John has mastered the art of answering the phone while dead asleep.  He actually somehow goes from snoring to business mode at the drop of a hat.  Pretty amazing, and I am trying to catch on.

The good news:  When you start early, you end early.  And with this job, when your work is done, it’s done.  No sitting around waiting just because your required to be somewhere between the hours of  blank and blank.  Its a good deal.  Seriously. 🙂

I’ll know in a few weeks whether this will be my permanent gig, or just a blissful little wrinkle in time that I will not soon forget.
